The Construction Effort Continues at Masjid Bilal Islamic Center

Your Support is Needed!

Despite the challenging times impacting us all, Masjid Bilal Islamic Center has continued its monumental effort to construct a new masjid and community center near downtown Los Angeles. The project has attracted international attention, with visitors and media worldwide visiting the site.

Masjid Bilal Islamic Center is the first Masjid built in true Los Angeles, for more than two decades and of the new millennium. Although most of the structure is now complete, and believers are making salat inside five times daily, much work is still needed to finalize this new house of Allah and its beautiful minaret, the tallest in California.

Strong community support has fueled this building process with contributions coming from around the world.

FINALIZING the masjid

"We pay as we go," says Imam Abdul Karim Hasan, the community's long-time religious leader.

"Allah has blessed us with some very hard-working people who have been very diligent in helping us raise funds. Our goal is to fully complete this new house of Allah, then begin construction of a new community center."

However, with an overall project shortfall still exceeding $1 million, Masjid Bilal Islamic Center's path to completion remains in the hands of those sincere believers willing to donate.

"There is still plenty work to do before we complete the masjid and minaret," says Hesham Sitita, construction manager for the project.

"We have a landmark here located in the heart of Los Angeles, just blocks from downtown. Stop by and visit. We need your support to complete this magnificent center for Islam."

COMMUNITY CENTER

"Our next step is to demolish the remaining old structure and begin construction of this wonderful multi-level community center, which will sit between the masjid and school," added Sitita.

Masjid Bilal Islamic Center is hoping to soon begin construction of a new multi-purpose center. This facility will provide the community with a safe hub for social outreach, educational enrichment, and spiritual growth in Los Angeles.

"This will be a place where people can come and be orientated into the knowledge of the universality of Al-Islam and the faith of revelation — Where we can have classes to teach the people what they need to know," added Imam Hasan.

a vision for the future

Building a masjid and community center is phase two of a three-phase plan the Bilal community has been implementing since 1999. Phase one was to build a modern state-of-the-art 16 classroom educational facility. The school building, named Bilal Learning Center, was completed in 2007. It now provides education to 300 children annually, serving as a community charter school.

On December 1 - 3, 2023, Masjid Bilal Islamic Center hosted its Inaugural Weekend Celebration. Muslims from around the world attended the three-day event, which was highlighted by the official opening of Masjid Bilal, built from the ground on Central Ave and Martin Luther King Blvd in Los Angeles.

L.A. mayor karen bass visits

A distinguished group of dignitaries and politicians joined the inaugural ceremonies including the Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and 9th District LA Councilman Curren Price, who all met with the community's long-time religious leader, Imam Abdul Karim Hasan.

"It was important for me to be here today and welcome the community," said Mayor Karen Bass during an interview with Muslim News Magazine.

"It was a tremendous honor for me to meet with Imam Hasan, and he took me through a tour and I saw this beautiful mosque here. I look forward to coming back and worshipping here with everyone."

Los Angeles Councilman Curren Price stated, "We know what an important role this Mosque has played in our community—right here on Central Avenue. This is a facility not just for Muslims, but for others as well."

“After the death of a person his actions stop, save three things: that he leaves behind: First continuous charity, second a knowledge from which some benefit may be obtained, and then a virtuous child who prays for him.”

"Please, please, we need your help and support," emphasizes Ahmed Radwan, Chairman of the Masjid Bilal Fundraising Committee.

"Brothers and sisters, this is your opportunity for eternal and reoccurring blessings. Do not fool yourself, saying I still have my life ahead of myself. We do not know if we're going to make it tomorrow. Please, we ask each one of you to help us and help yourself and share this opportunity with everyone you know."
